A key part of the mission of the ARP is the design and development of new scientific instruments to help sort out the chemistry of the stratosphere. Toward this end, we employee a core staff of engineers who are responsible for seeing instrument designs through from conception through deployment and beyond.
Our mechanical engineering staff includes a lead mechanical designer, a mechanical engineer and a machinist. This group is responsible for the mechanical design, fabrication, assembly and final integration of all our instruments.
Electrical engineering is responsible for all electrical and electronic systems which fly on our instruments. This group has designed, built and deployed a complete line of data acquisition electronics tailored to the specific demands of our family of instruments. The full-time staff includes two electrical engineers and one electrical technician.
Our software group has primary responsibility for all computing in the group. They have developed an extensive software architecture for data acquisition and process control which is used on all our instruments. They also provide system management services for our acutely heterogeneous networking environment. Software expertise is also available for specific projects throughout the group from electrical engineering to data analysis.
Here is a brief history of the instruments that have been built here.
